Family Outing to Hiddenite!

Even with girls who are 15 and 19, you can never have to many family fun days where we can all act like children at heart! With that thought in mind, we headed off to Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite, NC just outside of Taylorsville. I know you may say that all your children have already experienced the mine area during school field trips, however it is not just a return visit rather it is a family experience! Honestly, the mine area probably has not changed in years and I am not exaggerating this fact which in it own way is very entertaining, but the thrill of the hunt is still there. We loved sluicing. It is the most popular way of prospecting at the Emerald Hollow Mine. We just picked a seat on the covered sluiceway and washing buckets of ore to find gemstones. Mackenzie (Note: She is in the photo above standing in the stream) found a ruby (who know if it is large enough to do something with it); however it was a thrilling find.

Ok, I will admit that our mining or the Emerald Hollow Mine itself was not the purpose of the day, rather it was the laughs we had over the fears of throwing out emeralds, the mud on our clothes and our shaking journey up the stream stepping in unexpected holes under the water from past prospectors. It was a day of fun and memories.

I encourage you to wear old clothes, take a towel for everyone, water, snacks and go! Family activities do not have to cost tons of money and no one can argue that they are priceless!

Happy Birthday to a Wonderful Mom!

I have the most wonderful mother in the world and today is her birthday! She has always been there for me, no matter what comes my way. I promise the same to her. No matter what the future holds, I know I can always depend on my mom's love. I love you, Mom!

Releasing the Power of the Magic Bullet!

Our title sounds like a comic book line, but no it is the real Magic Bullet. I am so lucky to have a wonderful mom who bought me a Magic Bullet! It is coming out of the box today for a test drive! As many of you know, I am really into cooking at home, so I am ready to go! The many reviews online are all over the board, so I promise to report back on the results of my test run! One reviewer said, "The original "Bullet" is worth the $$ performs very well - we are making all kinds of new food - from "Smoothies" to new dressings." I only hope my review is as positive! Wish me luck!

If you have a Magic Bullet, I would love to hear from you. Please comment below.

The Fears of a Mother

Just a personal note today....

I am so lucky to have a wonderful daughter, Mackenzie. I am getting sentimental knowing she will be turning 16 in September. As the date of her birthday quickly approaches my fears begin to grow. Honestly, my parents had to pick me up from an accident not one time, but two. Did I mention that I had a speeding ticket also?

I fear that she will do the same things I did. She won't always pay close attention to her driving rather she will focus on the ringing of her phone or the song on the radio. What about texting while driving?!? I worry that she will not always use good judgment and will be in an accident. My biggest fear that if something did happen to her, I will not see that glorious smile or hear her sweet giggles. I realize all of these fears are normal for a mother; however it does not make it any easier. I know have to let Mackenzie fly the nest. Lord, can I keep her young and little for a little while longer?

Let's Make Ice Cream!

We did an ice cream blog for our Facebook contest, which is all about ice cream. It is not too late to post a comment on the Ivy Ridge Facebook wall about your favorite ice cream flavor, the brand of ice cream maker you enjoy or ice cream making experience, then you could win a $25.00 Gift Certificate.
I think I found the perfect ice cream maker for $50 bucks!
Cuisinart Automatic ICE20 Electric Ice Cream Maker is the winner! I have looked the web over for the perfect ice cream maker. I love the PBS series, America's Test Kitchen, so I turned to them for help. I had the their 2010 cookbook (photo), so who better to trust. The ATC testers rated the Cuisinart Automatic ICE20 Electric Ice Cream Maker as number one out of a series of other ice cream makers (some had huge retail prices and fancy options) and it only costs around $49.95! Before the summer is over, I want to be enjoying my own homeade ice cream, so has the title says~LET'S MAKE ICE CREAM!
